You may have heard of the term Eco-Driving, but….do you know what it means and do you know what the benefits are ?
Very simply, it can save us all money, both in terms of fuel consumption and wear and tear to our cars and there are enormous benefits to both the local and global environment. Eco-Driving also provides added benefits to drivers and passengers in the form of greater comfort and a more relaxed drive. Indeed Eco-Driving is often referred to as Eco-Safe Driving.
Eco-Driving can result in savings of up to 10% on fuel costs. As an example, if you use an average of 30 litres of fuel per week at, say, £1.30 per litre this equates to £2028 over a year. Adopting an eco style of driving and reducing fuel consumption by only 5%, you would save just over £100 annually. And remember, your fuel savings could easily be 10% or even higher. And savings are not only fuel related, you will also greatly reduce your maintenance costs.
5 Golden Rules
There are Five Golden Rules relating to Eco-Driving :
- Change Gear upwards as soon as possible
Shift up between 2.000 and 2.500 revolutions. (this depends on your car and fuel type). Do not accelerate quickly or harshly.
- Maintain a steady speed
Use the highest gear for the conditions and drive with low engine speed.
- Anticipate traffic flow
Look ahead as far as possible and anticipate what is happening. Plan your actions accordingly. Don’t brake sharply or heavily.
- Decelerate Smoothly
When you have to slow down or to stop, decelerate smoothly and leave the car in gear as long as is possible.
- Check the tyre pressure frequently
As an example, 25% too low tyre pressure increases rolling resistance by 10% and your fuel consumption by 2%.
Adopt these five rules and you will start saving money. However, there is much more to Eco Driving than can be covered here.
And the benefits are not only restricted to you the motorist.
Air pollution in the form of emissions will be reduced significantly. The European Climate Change Programme calculated a reduction potential of ECO-DRIVING of at least 50 million tons of CO2-emissions in Europe by 2010, saving about 20 billion EUROS.
ECO-DRIVING also reduces noise pollution as well as local air pollution. The engine noise of one car driving with 4000 rpm (revolutions per minute) equals the engine noise of 32 cars at 2000 rpm. Thus, ECO-DRIVING reduces one of the main problems of traffic in urban areas.
Drive Time can help you to adopt a more eco-friendly style of motoring. We are committed to Eco-Driving and as such are offering a two hour course at only £35.00.
Why not take advantage – save yourself some money and help protect the environment.
